Sometimes the bolts that secure fiber optic terminals can be left unsecured. We try to tightly secure the bolts when we are finished splicing each spot for several reasons. Most importantly is so nobody steps in and gets hurt. Another is because this could lead to a cut fiber optic wire, which happened recently near Traverse City.
An entire neighborhood lost service after a splicer (not ours) left a fiber hole open. The fiber optic cable was pulled out somehow and cut completely in half. After the neighborhood HOA reached out, one of our guys quickly arrived to assess the situation.
The terminal was still in place and had light but everything beyond was dead. With the hand hole being quite large, we decided to throw the cut cable into case. A quick 48 burn butt splice and the neighborhood was back in service.
Ribbonizing loose Tube Fiber
The quickest way to splice a large amount of single fiber optic tubes is to ribbonize them. Ribbonizing is when twelve tubes will be placed together at once with a single splice. This saves so much time because only 4 splices have to be made instead of 48.
